Community Batteries for Household Solar

Endeavour Energy is innovating its electricity network, adopting new technologies that are efficient, affordable, sustainable and will enable us to deliver on your future energy needs.

Community batteries play an important role in this network innovation. A community battery is a battery connected to the local electricity network that can store and share solar energy among customers connected to the network.

Endeavour Energy is currently testing how we can deliver the most benefit and best value to all customers through shared energy storage.

Community Batteries for Household Solar Program

One way we are doing this is by partnering with the Federal Government to support the delivery and roll-out of its co-funded Community Batteries for Household Solar Program, which will see 400 batteries installed across Australia, providing shared storage for up to 100,000 households.

Endeavour Energy has received grant funding from the Fedferal Government to rollout out more than 40 community batteries across six communities in our network area at Bidwill, Blaxland, Cabramatta, Dapto, Hobartville, and Warrawong.

Community and stakeholder engagement

We are working with local councils and elected representatives to propose locations where community batteries can become a valuable asset to the whole community, improving long term reliability while supporting our customers’ increasing uptake of solar energy and electric vehicles.

We look for locations that balance service provision, local amenity impacts and access to deliver community batteries that provide value and drive affordable and sustainable outcomes for our communities.

Over the next six months Endeavour Energy will be engaging with councils, communities and elected representatives regarding our community batteries proposals across the six nominated communities.

Please follow this site to find out more about the specific battery proposals for your community, and for further information from Endeavour Energy about how the benefits of a community battery will be shared in your local community.

About community batteries

Community batteries store excess power generated during the day by rooftop solar cells for later use when demand on the electricity network is higher, or when the sun isn’t shining. Community batteries can:

  • lower electricity bills
  • support more households to install rooftop solar
  • reduce pressure on the electricity grid
  • absorb excess solar energy that might cause voltage spikes in the electricity grid
  • lower emissions

These batteries help improve the efficiency, reliability, and capacity of your electricity network, benefiting all customers. By receiving a federally co-funded battery and participating in the Community Batteries for Solar Program your community can:

  • Save on household energy costs
  • Access battery storage without having to buy a battery
  • Reduce your community’s carbon footprint
  • Enjoy long term network service reliability
  • Make the most of your own sustainable technologies like solar and electric vehicles

Other Endeavour Energy community battery initiatives

We have also partnered with energy retailer, Origin Energy in the delivery of another Community Battery Trial to deliver 10 more community batteries to communities across our network.

Our first community battery was launched in Bungarribee, Blacktown in 2023, and batteries are currently being installed in Kiama, Shell Cove, Bowral, with futher batteries planned for Campbelltown, Liverpool, Shoalhaven and Wollondilly local government areas.
